Once Upon A Time...
how i met radio
You may not know this, but I went into the Texas Country
scene completely backwards! After recording my first demo
CD, I sent out home-made copies to all the radio stations
I could find an address for... (Sorry guys!) Miraculously,
Ken Murray from KTEX actually listened to the CD and told
a radio promoter about what he'd heard.
Enter Gerrie McDowell of Gerrieco Texas. Thanks to Ken, she
decided to take a chance on me, a completely unknown artist.
We prepared to launch my first single "Crazy" in January of
2009 when she asked me when my next live show was.
......oops?
Apparently playing live is a huge part of being in the
LIVE music scene--who knew? I'd done lots of singing
competitions and sang along with background tracks but
playing a show in a bar was a completely different
experience. Gerrie suggested playing acoustic shows around
town; my guitar skills spanned about five chords, which I
could strum one by one to write a song.
The real funny part: I'd be expected to play ON-AIR at
the various radio stations I visited! With only one month
to the release date I spent at least six hours playing
my first three songs over and over (and over) again.
The first radio station I performed "Crazy" for was,
ironically, KTEX in Brenham, Texas--the same station
that got me started! To all the wonderful radio guys who
heard me play that first time around, THANK YOU for
spinning "Crazy" anyway.
Long story short, it's been one year and three singles now--two with Gerrie and the latest with my new friends from Apex-Horizon Nashville. It's been three radio tours across the state and beyond, thousands of miles and hundreds of pictures. All the people I've met along the way have been so supportive! Thanks to my promoters and all the incredible radio stations around Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico two singles reached the top 20 on the Texas Music Charts. Let's do it again!!
